He is survived by: his wife Dr. Carla Hess; the mothers of children, Lorraine Tillis (Rowell), Heidi Landry of Honolulu, HI and Linda Landry (Daniel Pekearo) of Minneapolis, MN; his stepdaughter Annalisa Batson; his grandchildren, Elisabeth Washburn, Connor Washburn, Zachary Washburn, Spencer Sachi and Steward Sachi; his siblings, Roland, Helen, Denise and Raymond; and also Wendy Washburn (Brian) of Tampa, FL.

He was the recipient of the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Research in 1989.
