He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman Schaefer and Catherine Schaefer (Steinbach); his wives, Harriet Beeghly and LaVonne Widiger; his children, Joseph Jr., Mary Lou and Kathleen; his daughter-in-law Rita Schaefer; and his siblings, Herman Jr., Louis, James William (Bill), Helena, Dolores, Kathryn, Josephine, Beverly Annella, Lois and Rita.
He is survived by: his sons, Louis of New Rockford and Timothy of White Rock, NM; his children-in-law, Roger Miller of Pasco, WA and Helen Schaefer of St. Thomas; his close friend Violet Seibold of Fessenden; his sister LeNore Rood (Del) of Sturgis, MI; and his sister-in-law Darlene Daugherty of New Rockford. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren.
