He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar Fjelstad and Carole Fjelstad (Sandbeck); his stepfather Leo Janisch; his daughter-in-law Angel Fjelstad; and his uncles, Dan Sandbeck and Erik Sandbeck.
He is survived by: his wife Marcia Hurlbut of Fargo; his children, Michael Fjelstad II (Sherry), Christopher Fjelstad, Melissa Fjelstad and Matthew Fjelstad (Amber); and his brothers, Curt Flaten and Timothy Fjelstad. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
