He was predeceased by: his parents, Otellia Bertina Ehlers (Hillesland) and Jack Ehlers; his sister Amaryllis Rabenberg; his wife Mary Irene Ehlers; his sons-in-law, Robert Thingelstad and Steve Husen; and his grandchildren, Laura Thingelstad and Tyrone "Ty" Gowery.
He is survived by: his former wives, Lois Mary Ehlers and Mary Irene "Renie" Maloy; his children, Dawn Gowery of Kingwood, Texas, Denise Thingelstad of Watertown, Mary Husen of Sioux City, Iowa, Owen Ehlers of NewCastle, Nebraska, Alicia Salas of Lead and Sandra Ehlers of Becida, Minnesota; and his stepchildren, Suzy Smith (Christian) of Carrolton and Jeff Jordan of Midway, Georgia. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.
