He was predeceased by: his parents, Valentine Welder and Clara Welder (Glatt); and his significant other Dolores Berg. He is survived by: his sisters, Delane Scallon and Betty McIntyre of Concord, CA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.

Val requested to have a closed casket and that instead of flowers all memorial donations be made to Manor St Joseph in Edgeley, North Dakota.
