He was predeceased by: his wife Annaclete Bernhardt (Cleta); his son John; his grandson Chance Scales; and his children-in-law, Terri Hartman and Robert Garcia, Sr..
He is survived by: his children, Cleta Raymond (Ray), Margaret Dykstra (Tim Bergquist), Caroline May, Veronica Scales (Mike), Tom (Allison), Tim and Jim Hartman (La Don); his daughter-in-law Sandie Hartman; and his brother Paul. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
He and Cleta moved to Richardton, North Dakota in 2005, where she soon went to the local nursing home to receive care for Parkinson's disease.
