He was predeceased by: his parent Violet Charboneau Fournier; his granddaughter Kira; his brother Gordon Fournier; his brother-in-law Ricky Ray Olson; and his parents-in-law, Adolph and Evelyn Olson.
He is survived by: his wife Sonja Olson; his children, Richard Desjarlais Jr. of Devils Lake and Shannon Desjarlais of Crary, ND; his grandchildren, Ethan, Austin, Abel Desjarlais, Jazmyn Van Steenvoort and Easton Desjarlais; his siblings, Marie Olson (Ole), Doris Desjarlais, Virgil Desjarlais, Bonnie Bellile (Peter) and Wayne Kennedy (Amy Charboneau) of Fort Totten; and his parents-in-law, Sandra Olson (Rodney Vickerman), Randy Olson (Linda) and Sharon Olson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
