He was predeceased by: his parents, Cecil Mertens and Rosemary Mertens (Hamilton); his stepmother Carol Marthe Mertens; his sister Susie Daugherty-Semmens; and his brothers-in-law, Donald Daugherty and Roger Semmens.

He is survived by: his son Matthew; his granddaughter Haden; his siblings, Bill Mertens, Ceya Holler (Don) of Devils Lake, Kathy Holler (Ron) of Grand Forks, ND, Mary Koenig (Leland) of New Rockford, ND and Pattie Wilcox (Allan) of Highlands Ranch, CO; and his niece Marthe.
