He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Johnson and Nellie Johnson (Rugroden); his daughter Mary Jo; his brothers, Ronald Johnson, Roger Johnson and James "Jimmy" Johnson; his grandson Clay James LaMotte; and his siblings-in-law, Myrtle Burdick, Alfred Elgaen and Carl Elgaen Jr..

He is survived by: his wife Betty; his children, Carol Johnson, Sally LaMotte (Gene Jr.), Carla Bjornson (Paul) and Gary D. Johnson of Devils Lake, ND; his sister Jane Wentz (Ralph); his grandchildren, Loralee LaMotte of Leeds, ND, Lukas LaMotte of Devils Lake, Morningstar Bjornson of Devils Lake, Marcus Miller of Devils Lake, Kayla Miller of Devils Lake, Cody Bjornson of Devils Lake, Dominick Bjornson of Devils Lake, Kali Bjornson of Devils Lake, Katiri Bjornson of Devils Lake, Jonah Bjornson of Devils Lake, Tyray Bjornson of Devils Lake, Terrance Bjornson of Devils Lake, Shyree Bjornson of Devils Lake and Bella Johnson of Devils Lake; his great grandchildren, Alexis Hill, Elliot Bjornson and Devils Lake; and his siblings-in-law, Louise Johnson of Stone Mountain, GA, Pat Johnson, Carol Wilkinson and Sidney Elgaen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
