He was predeceased by: his parents, James Joseph "Joe" and Marion Whelan (Colby); and his granddaughter Anna Whelan Sjursen. He is survived by: his wife Mae Severson; his sons, Jeffrey Whelan (Greta) of Crystal, ND and Douglas Whelan (Barbara) of Crystal, ND; his granddaughters, Kate Suda (Derrick) of Grafton, ND and Grace Whelan of Fargo, ND; his great grandchildren, Nadia Sjursen and Cole Suda; his brother Richard Whelan (Cleone) of Crystal, ND; and his sisters-in-law, Rose Boyum (Kenny) and Betty Tryan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
