He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Mathern and Elizabeth Mathern; and his granddaughter Paige Vearrier. He is survived by: his wife Elaine Lipp; and his children, Joe (Sue), Shelly (Mitch Torgeson), Gerard (Pam), Greg, Tom (DeAnn), Ted (Andrea), Mary and Kari (Eric Stromstad). He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Family Indian Mission, Diocese of Bismarck.
