He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Stangeland and Emma Stangeland (Norheim); his brother Ellert; and his son Nathan. He is survived by: his wife Theone Bakken; his brothers, Carl and Gustav; his children, David Stangeland (Lori) of Sioux Falls, SD, Ruth Smith (Stuart) of Bismarck and Esther Roehl (Mark) of Hutchinson, MN; and his grandchildren, Christian, Jenna Smith, Serena and Madelyn Roehl.
