He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Hilz and Ida Hilz (Schutz); his brother Duane; his parents-in-law, Albert and Emma Miller; and his son-in-law Randy VanPelt.
He is survived by: his children, Carey VanPelt (Kevin Flaagan), Steve Hilz (Darlene) and Carla Harildstad; his grandchildren, Erica (Aaron), Brittany (Kyle), Lindsay (Nick), Heather (Dan), Steven (Lindsey), Joseph (Brooke), Daniel (Lydia) and Eric; his great grandchildren, Austin, Kailynn, Taylor, Jackson, Mason, Luke and Winston; and his wife Helen Hilz.
Memorials preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Knife River Care Center, and Sakakawea Hospice.
