He was predeceased by: his parents, Oran Abbey and Alice Abbey (Herman); his parents-in-law, David and Pearl Welk; his siblings, Lois Lang (Loren), Marilyn Gustafson (Arvid), Lenore Wetzel, Donna Stasel (Stan), Gale Abbey (Lorraine) and Jim Abbey (Joyce); his brother-in-law Jerry Welk; and his nephews, Mike Dolce, Jr. and Scott Stasel.

He is survived by: his wife Janice Welk (Jan) of Beulah; his children, Alana (Bill Schlegel) of Bismarck, Greg (Norine) of Jamestown, ND and Alicia Aleshire (Shane) of Mandan; his grandchildren, Cody Erstad, Abbi Crofoot (Marcus), Mikki Gathman (Jacob), Teagan, Emma, Beckett and Piper Aleshire; his stepgranddaughter Savannah Christl; his sisters, June Dolce of Liberty Lake, WA and Colleen Flemmer of Stevensville, MT; and his brother-in-law Don Wetzel of Bismarck. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
