He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius Gehrke and Hanna Sofie Gehrke (Hillesland); his grandmother Emma Messerschmitt; his wife Helen Hanson; his son-in-law Grant Wiest; his brothers, Earl Gehrke and Gene Gehrke; and his siblings-in-law, Norman Aslakson, David Halverson, Roger Hanson, Orvin Hanson, Richard Trostad and Marjorie Hanson.
He is survived by: his cousins, German and Wilhelm Emil "Willy" Messerschmitt; his daughters, Stephanie Engberg (Randy) of Grand Prairie, TX, Patricia Wiest of Herreid, SD and Janelle Gehrke of Bondurant, IA; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Prita), Brandon, Hannah Engberg, Adam, Luke (Aubriauna), Mallory Wiest, Nyanti and Olivia Gehrke; his sisters, Juliet Aslakson (Aneta) and Irene Halverson (Phoenix); and his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gehrke (Roseau), Bonnie Gehrke (Mayville), Phyllis Trostad (Cooperstown) and Gretchen Hanson (Salt Lake City).
The family requests memorials be given to the Aneta Parkview Center or Silent Hill Cemetery Association.
