He is survived by: his children, Tonya Catherine Bates (Ryan Zeck) of Concord and Michael Todd Vestal (Donna) of Statesville; his brother Paul Bates (Mickey) of Culpeper, VA; his grandchildren, Thomas Bryson Vestal and Gretchen Vestal; his pet Jackson; his aunts, Virginia Beshears Foster, Viola Beshears Bustle, Cynthia Beshears Mahaffey and Debbie Beshears Roten; his uncle Neal Beshears; and his nieces and nephews, Paul William Bates, Deborah Bates Hollowell, Charles Edward Bates and Jennifer Lynn Owen. He is also survived by many cousins, great-nieces and nephews.
