He was predeceased by: his mother Eunice Marie Holcomb Ledbetter; his stepfather McKinley Ledbetter; and his former wife Joy Elizabeth Turner Holcomb. He is survived by: his wife Norma Jean Holcomb; his children, Greg Holcomb of Winston-Salem, Andra "Ann" Johnson of High Point and Kristie Smith (Brian) of Pittsboro; his stepchildren, Robin Smithberger (Jeff) of Charlotte and William Payne, Jr. (Tamara) of Winston-Salem; his grandchildren, Patrick Holcomb, Elaina Wahl, Amy Johnson, Amanda Canoy, Mikayla Smith and Dakota Smith; his great grandchildren, Jeannie Holcomb, Kira, Nathan Wahl, Timothy Reece and Finleigh Canoy; his stepgrandchildren, Holly Payne, Andrew and Robert Christian; and his great grandchild Baby Joseph.
