He was predeceased by: his parents, Forlenner Hairston Carpenter and Lillian Bethea Carpenter; his grandmother Mamie Bethea; and his brothers, Shepherd Lee, Benjamin Franklin and Lester Eugene Carpenter.
He is survived by: his wife Martha Davis Carpenter; and his siblings, Sarah Carpenter Hicks of Winston-Salem, NC, Prewlow Carpenter (Marie) of Winston, Alvin B. Carpenter (Mae Kathryn) of Sicklerville, NJ and Robert Carpenter (Elsie) of Newark, NJ. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
