He was predeceased by: his parents, Hazel Simpson and William Simpson; and his wife Gisele. He is survived by: his children, Cannon Stoffel (Jay) of Orlando, Heather Norgard (William) of New York and William D. Simpson of Winston-Salem; and his sister Virginia Whedon of Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or the National Audubon Society.
