“Ruby was my family’s housekeeper and babysitter. She was a precious soul. I miss riding the bus with her (she’d always let me put the money in the slot) to go get fresh fish. I can still taste Ruby’s fried sweet potato pies. She made the pies the width of my lunchbox, wrapping them in wax paper. I can’t tell you how many hungry students I had to fend off when she packed me a pie. When my daddy died she came with warm hugs. Ruby, you rest well now. Love, Kim Anthony-Williams”
