He was predeceased by: his parents, Boyd Lee Cates and Dorothy Kelly Cates; his brothers, Jerry Cates and Timothy Cates; and his nephew Rod Bramblett (Paula Bramblett).
He is survived by: his wife Lynne Boswell Cates; his sister Vickie Cates Lynn of Valley, Alabama; his nephew Brad Lynn of Valley, Alabama; his nieces, Kelly Cates Gilbert (Michael) of Roanoke and Susie Cates Rooney (Paul); his great-nephew Paul of Rosharon, Texas; his sister-in-law June Boswell Schafer (Ken) of Greer; his nephew Tony Schafer of South Carolina; his niece Becky Schafer of South Carolina; his great-nieces, Shelby Bramblett of Auburn, Alabama, Holly Lynn of LaGrange, Georgia and Susannah Lynn of Valley, Alabama; his great-nephew Joshua Bramblett of Auburn; and his pets, Pepper, Maggie Mae and Bailey.
