He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Lee Newton and Nannie Mae Newton; his wife Peggy Davis Newton; and his brother James Edward Newton. He is survived by: his son Joseph Royal Newton, Jr. (Michella); his grandchildren, William Joseph Newton, Caroline Elizabeth Newton, Emily Jordan Newton, Jonathan Davis Newton and Jonah Westwood Newton; and his sister Nedra Broyhill. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
