He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Mona; his children, Adrienne Lee Early (Christopher Allen Beavers) and John Joseph Early V (Jennifer Early); his grandchildren, John Joseph Early VI and Juliet; his sisters, Patricia Early, Kathleen Early and Marilyn Early; and his pet Mighty Quinn.
He was the Director of Pharmacy at Dorothea Dix Hospital, Raleigh, where he was known as a benevolent dictator until his retirement due to Parkinson's disease in 2008.
