He is survived by: his wife Frances Everett Chesson; his son Jim; his daughter-in-law Susan Chesson; his daughter Serena; his son-in-law Brian Paschal; his siblings, Madaline Johnson and Shelton; and his siblings-in-law, Lela Chesson, James Everett and Carolyn Roberts. He is also survived by six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Martin Memorial Library or to the Benevolence Committee at Memorial Baptist Church in Williamston.
