He was predeceased by: his wife Doris Ellen Herndon Coats; his siblings, Richard, Robert, Walter, Stanley, Helen, Joanne, Don and Norma; and his parents, Clifford Coats and Isabella Hanks Coats.
He is survived by: his children, Ellen Lipscomb (Bill) of Wilkesboro, James "Eddie" Coats, Jr. (Joy) of Wilmington, Cliff Coats (Kim) of Clayton and Mark Coats of Wallace; his grandchildren, Jim Lipscomb, Peter Lipscomb, Seth Coats, Jerrell Coats, Allison Smith, Karl Coats, Johanna Hux and Leni Coats; his great grandchildren, Claire Lipscomb, Jakob Lipscomb, Henry Lipscomb, Kayne Coats, Mallory Woodall, Gavin Smith, Eason Smith, Gunnar Hux, Dominick Coats and Roman Coats; and his siblings, Thelma Weeks (John) of Eloy, AZ, Leona Schmitter of Millington, MI, Dora "Dodie" Hazelwood of Spring Hill, TN and Jerry Coats (Audrey) of Chesaning, MI.. He is also survived by loving husband, a gentle and tender father, a fun-loving and playful grandfather, and favorite uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
