He was predeceased by: his parents, Lum Thornburg and Leona Sparks; and his brother Gary Thornburg. He is survived by: his wife Inez Thornburg; his daughters, Julie Saunders (Mike) of Greensboro, Vicky Reed of Whitsett, Michelle Harris (Kip) of Whitsett, Karen Thornburg-Tate (James) of Madison and Donna Thornburg of Greensboro; and his siblings, Homer Ray Thornburg, Joyce Isley and Jerry Thornburg. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
