He was predeceased by: his parents, J. D. Mayes and Helen Mayes; his brother Teddy Mayes; and his parents-in-law, Chalmers and Josephine Rabon.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Elizabeth Mayes; his sons, Rabon Mayes (Mona) of Fort Mill, SC and Craig Mayes (Denise) of Mooresville; his grandchildren, Victoria Casasola (Sebastian) of Greensboro, Salem Mayes (Max Anderson) of Tampa and Grant Mayes of The Citadel; and his sister Sherry West (Jimmy) of Charlotte.
