It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Athlene Jernigan of Whiteville, North Carolina, born in Columbus, North Carolina, who passed away on September 25, 2023, at the age of 81, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her mother Bertha Sasser Jernigan; and her siblings, Gracie Byrd and William Jernigan. She is survived by: her nephew Joseph Byrd (Melissa) of Nakina; and her siblings, Carolyn Fiegel (Bill) of Whiteville, Christine Lindsey of Stanton, VA., Joyce Hamm of Hickory, NC, Rosemary Cooke of Orange Park and Marshall Jernigan of Whiteville. She is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
