He was predeceased by: his parents, Chester Robert Kelly Sr. and Jesse Virginia Simpson Kelly; his wife Novella Brown Kelly; his son Gary Kelly; his siblings, Wayne Kelly and Ramona Proffer; and his grandson Daniel Joseph.
He is survived by: his children, Chester Robert Kelly III, Kevin Kelly of West Jefferson, Brian Kelly of Vale, Piper Gibson of Lincolnton, Christie Tutherow of Lincolnton and Susan Joseph of Texas; and his stepdaughter Joyce McGuire of Arkansas. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 24 great-grandchildren, 1 step-great-grandchild, 5 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
