He was predeceased by: his former wife Linda Atkins; and his siblings, R. J. Atkins, J. C. Atkins, C. A. Atkins, Ella Mae Laude and Frances Oldham.
He is survived by: his wife Sheila Barber Atkins; his children, Steven Mark Atkins (Jennifer) of West End and Rhonda Atkins Dutton (Clay) of West End; his sister Beulah Currie of Rockingham; his sister-in-law Carolyn Smith of Hamlet; and his grandchildren, Jessica, Amber, Brian, Dylon, Braxton and Colton. He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren.
