He was predeceased by: his parents, William Edward Butler Sr. and Valinda Satterfield Butler; and his children, W. B. Butler, Jr. and Lisa Butler Kepley. He is survived by: his wife Judith Zimmerman Butler; his children, Stacey Butler Davis, Paul Edward Butler of Welcome and Lydia Butler Hill of Welcome; and his siblings, Jerry Butler (Cinda) of Mebane, Jeff Butler (Aida), Valinda Feather of Fairfax, VA, Juanita Bell of Burlington and Marie Ammons of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
