He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Howell Smith and Rosa Gladden Smith; and his brother Joe Burt Smith. He is survived by: his wife Jeanette Chapman Smith; his children, Hilton Howell Smith (Cindy McWethy Smith) and Susan "Smitty" Dotson-Smith (Matthew Dotson-Smith); and his granddaughters, Serena "Blair" Dotson-Smith and Maya Dotson-Smith. He is also survived by cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to a charity of your choice, or to the J. Howell Smith Family History Department Fund, which encourages students to become historians.
