He was predeceased by: his parents, Verlan Shelton and Emma McMahan Shelton; and his sister Carolyn Shuler. He is survived by: his grandchildren, Chloe, Jaxon, Westie and Ozzie; his wife Marci Shelton; his children, Cale Shelton (Shelly) and Laura Gunter Jones (Dewayne); and his sisters, Shirley Elberson of New Jersey, Linda McCarter (Robert) of Waynesville, Faye Rogers (Bill) of Waynesville, Diane Ashe (James) of Waynesville, Sandra Cooper (Harold) of Waynesville and Wanda "Penny" Rider of Waynesville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
