She was predeceased by: her parents, Verlin Evans and Mary Burgess Evans; her husband Joe Jack Messer; and her brother-in-law Keith Gibson. She is survived by: her children, Donna Messer Hunter (David) and Anthony Messer (Wendy); her grandchildren, Alisha Hunter Hickman (Jeremy), Stephanie Hunter, Emily Messer and Ethan Messer; her great grandchild Hannelore Hickman; and her siblings, Ollie Gibson, Esther Hightower (Jerry), Larry Evans (Ilene) and Charles Ray Evans (LouAnn). She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family respectfully asks that instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Haywood County Schools Foundation Lunch Assistance Fund or Needy Children's Fund at 1233 N. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
