He is survived by: his parents, David Abernathy and Estelle Abernathy; his siblings, Jonathan Abernathy (Carmen), Paul Abernathy (Lora), Stephen Abernathy (Holly), Michael Abernathy, Emily Abernathy, Katherine Abernathy (Matt Stvartak) and Meredith Abernathy (Jimi Haley); and his nieces and nephews, Olivia, Shiloh, Sean, Coen, Camrin and Logan.

He spent several weeks in joint exercises in the United Arab Emirates before the exercises were suspended due to Covid.
