He was predeceased by: his sisters, Nancy Respess and Liddie Terry. He is survived by: his wife Lucy Mae Clark Gurganus; his children, Jay Mack Gurganus III and Tracy Crawford (Tony); his stepson Jesse Edward Buck Jr; his grandchildren, Ethan, Thomas, Jessica, Morgan and Justin; and his sister Joyce Williams (Frankie). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
