He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Curtis Spence and Mary DeHart Spence Hensley; his stepfather Ellis Hensley; his brother Fred Spence; and his cousin Judy Cassidy.

He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Jean Coleman; his sons, Scott Spence (Tara) of East Longmeadow, MA, Ian Spence of Richmond, VA and Nathan Spence (Melanie) of Richmond; his siblings, Charles "Sonny" Spence (Betty) of Patrick County, VA, Raymond Spence (Earlean) of Patrick County, VA, Frank Spence (Francis) of Patrick County, VA, Junior Spence of Patrick County, VA, Alvin Ayers of Eden, NC and Margaret Massey of Patrick County, VA; his grandchildren, Leo, Miriam, Seamus, Wren and Parker Spence; and his daughter Tammy Jones of Richmond.
