He was predeceased by: his wife Mary Pigford Vernon; and his parents, Edwin L. and Maude King Vernon. He is survived by: his children, Melvin Vernon of Warsaw, Jenny V. Whitfield (Boots) of Goldsboro, Mary Lee McKay of Newport and Debbie V. Pergerson (Mitch) of Roxboro; his niece Hilda Miller; and also, Annie Outlaw and Ralph. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren.
