He was predeceased by: his parents, John Samuel and Minnie Lee Riddle Townsend; his wife Virginia Spencer Townsend; his great grandchildren, Molly and Gunnar Townsend; and his siblings, Floyd Alan, Aubrey, Freddie, Robbie, Charlie Townsend, Lucille Burnette, Lena Williams and Mary Townsend.
He is survived by: his sons, Murrell L. Townsend, Jr. (Betty) and Scott Alan Townsend (Lynn); his grandchildren, Josh, Justin, Zack Townsend, Jessica Bergin and Scott Silby; and his great grandchildren, Hunter, Elijah, Adrianna, Charlotte and Wesley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Ridge Assisted Living at 411 Windmill St, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
