He was predeceased by: his brother Ronald Cates. He is survived by: his wife Lois Tuttle Cates; his daughter Wendy Cates (Frank James, Jr.); and his granddaughter Jessica James. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brenner's Children's Hospital, Medical Center Blvd, Winston Salem, NC 27157 or to the Stokes County Animal Shelter, 1999 Sizemore Road, Germanton, NC 27019.
