He was predeceased by: his parents, Chess Spence and Bessie Beauchamp Spence; and his sisters, Iris McCollum, Virginia Lathinghouse, Ann Beamon and Chestine Henderson.
He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Reynolds Spence; his son Brian Spence (Nikki) of Wake Forest; his grandchildren, Maddie Cundiff (Daniel) of Athens, Charlie Tibbetts of Athens, Chess of Wake Forest and Ben Spence of Wake Forest; his sister Marie Lathinghouse of DeFuniak Springs, Florida; and his nephew Michael of Winston Salem.
