He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Reynolds and Effie Gillis McMillan, Sr.; and his siblings, Edwin "Whit" Whitfield McMillan, Sr., Albert Reynolds McMillan, Sr. and Effie McMillan Parsons.

He is survived by: his wife Carol Bridges McMillan; his son James Spurgeon McMillan, Jr. of Hamlet; and his siblings, Lauchlin McMillan of Alabama and Jane McMillan of Mt. Airy, NC.
