She was predeceased by: her parents, Sam Jones Carter and Ollie Covington Carter of Virginia; her husband John Franklin Chewning of Wadesboro; her daughter Sybil Gatewood; and her siblings, Virginia Brooks, Tilton Carter, Hazel Caulder, Audrey Threadgill and S. J. Carter.
She is survived by: her son Steve; her children-in-law, Ann Chewning of Wadesboro and Ed Gatewood of Wadesboro; her grandsons, Shawn Harris of Wadesboro, Brad Gatewood of Wadesboro, Tyler Chewning (Mirandi) of Wadesboro and Rev. Steven Chewning (Meghan) of Sanford; and her siblings, Eleanor Pesce of Wadesboro and Terry Carter (Julia) of Anderson, SC. She is also survived by her 9 great-grandchildren.
