He was predeceased by: his parents, Hugh L. Garner and Shula Lewis Garner; his siblings, Jimmy Garner (Nell), Mabel Garner Daniel (Bob), Paul Garner (Carol), Fred Garner (Jean), Irene Garner Douglas (Bobby), Alma Garner Seward Sharpe, Larry Garner and Judy Garner Dudley; and his brother-in-law Don Garner (Wanda).
He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Whitaker Garner; his children, Melissa Garner McKenzie (Douglas McKenzie), Thomas Darrell Garner (Kelly Cotten Garner) and Tammy Garner Trueblood (Mark Trueblood); his grandchildren, Elizabeth McKenzie Baddour (Michael), Jessica McKenzie Curlee (Paul), Christi Harmon Shaw (Eric), Sarah Melissa Cebra (Ian), Sawyer Garner, Rachel Trueblood Fann (Brandon), Zachary Trueblood, Nathan Trueblood, Noah Trueblood and Courtney Wilson; his brother Robert E. Garner (Bobbie); his sister-in-law Betty Gibbons Garner; his cousin Jerry Garner; his siblings-in-law, Janet Whitaker Frye, Lucille Whitaker Collins (Billy), Wanda Whitaker Garner, Russell Whitaker (Mary Ruth) and Gail Whitaker Gathagan (Gene); and his brother Don. He is also survived by nieces, nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday, April 6th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Cox Memorial Funeral Home (4888 US-1, Vass, NC 28394). A celebration of life was held on Monday, April 7th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church (17721 NC-902, Bear Creek, NC 27207). A burial was held on Monday, April 7th 2025 at the Yates Thagard Baptist Church Cemetery (3250 Niagara Carthage Rd, Whispering Pines, NC 28327).
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons in memory of Pastor Darrell Garner.
