It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of James Hilton Vernelson of Vanceboro, North Carolina, born in Wilson, North Carolina, who passed away on August 5, 2024, at the age of 90, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Reverend John D. Vernelson and Lillian Corbett Vernelson (Eleanor Copeland Vernelson); his siblings, Joe Vernelson, John Vernelson and Elaine Taylor; his siblings-in-law, Erline Wynne, Dan Wynne, Walter Taylor and Billy Mizell; and his nephew Danny Vernelson.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Harrison Vernelson; his siblings, Wayne Vernelson (Sherry), Ann Vernelson James (Douglas) and Linda Vernelson Mizzell; his sisters-in-law, Ann Vernelson and Ellen Vernelson; his children, James Dwight Vernelson (Jimmie Sue) and Renaye Vernelson Andrews (Timmy); his grandchildren, Susan Andrews, David Andrews (Charlotte), Anna Vernelson Daw (Benton) and Jay Vernelson (Kayla); and his great grandchildren, Payton Andrews, Nikole Callahan, Jaxon Callahan, Jacob Andrews, Hailey Andrews, Ella Daw, Lynleigh Daw and Watson Vernelson. He is also survived by grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Parker's Chapel FWB Church or Hospice House.
