He was predeceased by: his son Barker Tilghman. He is survived by: his wife Bobbie McLawhorn Tilghman; his son Gary Tilghman (Pam) of Kinston, NC; his grandchildren, Justin Tilghman (Ellen) of Kinston, NC, Daryl Mills of Kinston, NC and Alyssa Gannon (Christian) of Raleigh, NC; and his siblings, Eloise Davis of New Bern and Cleveland Tilghman (Virginia) of Cove City, NC.. He is also survived by four great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter.
