He was predeceased by: his parent R. E. Powers; his former wife Bessie; and his siblings, David Powers, Ruis Cox, Eldridge Cox, Bernard Cox, David W. Cox, Jackie Powers, Robert Powers (Bubba), Margaret Cameron, Miriam Thomas and Cleonis Benton.

He is survived by: his wife Bunny Overton; his sons, Paul (Angie) and Jonathan (Leigh); his grandchildren, Jonathan, Erin and Cari Powers; his sister Faye Greco; and his sisters-in-law, Myrlee Powers, Millie Tripp and Dolly Hathaway.

Visitation was held on Sunday, March 30th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Wilkerson Funeral Home & Crematory - Greenville (2100 E 5th St, Greenville, NC 27858). A funeral service was held on Sunday, March 30th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers; memorial contributions may be made to Christ Hope Church, 1396 E Firetower Rd. Bldg B, Greenville, NC 27858 or Lane's Chapel Methodist Church, 2907 Highway 55 East, Kinston, NC 28501.

“I know it will be hard for Dan's loving family to say goodbye to such a wonderful human being. I remember him most fondly when I was 12 or 13, and he was in his twenties. He was married to my cousin Bunny, and all family gatherings, Dan would seek me out....an awkward teenager, and ask me all about my life and then showed great interest in whatever it I was interested in. My wife JJ and I asked him to officiate at our wedding, 50 years ago, and he was such pleasure to work with .”
