He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Highsmith and Mary Pittman Highsmith. He is survived by: his wife Melina Byrd of Valle Crucis; his daughter Mary "Abby" (Joe Bertone) of Wilmington; his siblings, Joseph Highsmith (Kathleen) of Lincolnton and Mary Elizabeth Butler of Charlotte; his nephew Tristan Highsmith (Jamie); and his great-niece Emma. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
