He is survived by: his wife Kathy Walker Carter; his daughters, Christina Franklin (Kenny) of Hickory and Regina Bravo-Romero; his siblings, Wanda Collingwood of Morganton, Larry Carter of Morganton and Vickie Burleson of Morganton; his grandchildren, Olivia Franklin, Justin Franklin, Dylan Surbaugh, Kathryn Walker, Juliana Bravo-Walker, Alvaro Bravo-Hernandez and Lupe Bravo-Hernandez; his great grandchild Aileen Bravo of Christopher Bravo; his cousin Debbie Icard; his aunt Don Hull; and his uncle Janette Hull. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Burke County Friends for Animals, and Burke United Christian Ministries.
