He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Lester, Flonnie Bates, Lawrence and Bertha Gibson; and his nephew Christopher Bates.
He is survived by: his parents, James Edward and Dorothy Gibson Bates; his fiancée Amy Keith; and his siblings, Teresa Newman (Ray) of Franklin, Martha Lang (Keith) of Vale, NC, JoAnn Brown (Michael) of Tuckasegee, Margie Dunn (Frank) of Cherokee, Debbie Bates (Randy) of Tuckasegee, April Bates (Michael) of Tuckasegee and Conrad Bates of Tuckasegee. He is also survived by 11 nieces; 6 nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
